FIFA World Cup 2026: USA vs Australia Match Preview, Team News, Prediction
The United States will look to continue their impressive start to the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they take on Australia in a crucial Group Stage clash in Seattle on Friday.
Mauricio Pochettino's side silenced many of their critics with a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match, while Australia pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by defeating Turkey 2-0.
Match Preview
The USA entered the World Cup under significant pressure, with many questioning whether the co-hosts possessed the quality needed to challenge for the latter stages of the competition.
However, encouraging performances in pre-tournament friendlies, including a 3-2 victory over Senegal and a narrow 2-1 defeat against Germany, hinted that Pochettino's squad was moving in the right direction.
Those positive signs were on full display against Paraguay. The Americans started brightly and took an early lead after Damian Bobadilla accidentally turned the ball into his own net inside seven minutes.
Folarin Balogun then produced a sensational performance, scoring twice to put the game beyond Paraguay's reach. The striker became only the second player in United States World Cup history to score multiple goals in a single match.
Although Paraguay managed to reduce the deficit in the second half, Giovanni Reyna's stoppage-time strike completed an emphatic 4-1 victory that sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament.
Australia, meanwhile, produced one of the shocks of the opening round by defeating highly-rated Turkey 2-0.
Many experts had tipped Turkey to make a deep run in the competition, but the Socceroos delivered a disciplined and resilient display. Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring before Connor Metcalfe added a second goal to secure all three points.
Despite enjoying only 28% possession and facing 30 shots throughout the contest, Australia defended heroically. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach emerged as the star of the match with eight crucial saves on his competitive international debut.
The victory has dramatically boosted Australia's confidence, and another positive result against the USA would put them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.

Team News
The USA are expected to field a similar lineup to the one that comfortably defeated Paraguay.
There was a slight concern regarding Christian Pulisic after the AC Milan forward was substituted at half-time due to a minor knock. However, both Mauricio Pochettino and captain Tyler Adams have confirmed that the winger should be fit and available for selection.
Folarin Balogun is expected to lead the attack once again after his outstanding two-goal performance, while Giovanni Reyna and Timothy Weah should provide support in attacking areas.
Australia manager Tony Popovic is also likely to keep faith with the team that defeated Turkey.
Goalkeeper Patrick Beach should retain his place after his heroics, with Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar and Cameron Burgess expected to form a three-man defensive line.
Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe will be key attacking threats as the Socceroos attempt to spring another upset.
Predicted Lineups
USA
Turner; Dest, Richards, Ream, Robinson; Adams, McKennie, Musah; Reyna, Balogun, Pulisic
Australia
Beach; Circati, Souttar, Burgess; Miller, O'Neill, Metcalfe, Bos; Goodwin, Irankunda, Duke
Prediction
Australia deserve enormous credit for their victory over Turkey, but the USA looked significantly more convincing in their opening match and will have the backing of a passionate home crowd.
The Americans possess greater attacking quality and should create plenty of opportunities against an Australian side that spent long periods defending in their first game.
Prediction: USA 2-0 Australia
